Nursing Jobs in Canada With Visa Sponsorship 2026: $65,000 Salary for Registered Nurse (RN)

Canada is short of nurses. That is not a slogan. Hospitals, long-term care homes and health authorities keep posting RN, LPN/RPN and nurse-practitioner jobs because retirements and an older population outrun the domestic graduate pipeline.

“Visa sponsorship” in this field is not a farm labourer poster. It is two files that must both close:

  1. A licence from the provincial nursing college.
  2. An IRCC work permit or permanent-residence application that matches your NOC code.

Skip the college and the embassy will not save you. Skip IRCC and the college licence does not let you board the plane.

Wages below use Government of Canada Job Bank style medians published into 2026. A full-time RN at the national median of about CAD $43.27 an hour is roughly CAD $90,000 a year on 2,080 hours. Alberta and British Columbia sit higher. Ontario is close to the national line. Night differentials, weekend premiums and overtime push experienced hospital RNs toward CAD $100,000–$115,000+. That is the price tag on this article — not CAD $200,000, and not a PSW wage dressed up as an RN job.

Official pages to keep open: IRCC work in Canada, Express Entry, Job Bank — registered nurse, NNAS, NCLEX.

The three nursing jobs people actually mean

Role NOC Typical 2026 pay Express Entry healthcare draws
Registered nurse / registered psychiatric nurse 31301 Median ~$43/hr; CAD $65,000–$115,000+ with shift premiums Yes
Licensed practical nurse (RPN in Ontario) 32101 Roughly CAD $50,000–$75,000 Yes
Nurse practitioner 31302 Median ~$61.54/hr; often CAD $100,000–$140,000+ Yes
Nurse aide / PSW / orderly 33102 Often CAD $46,000–$58,000 No (TEER 4 — different door)

If your home title is “nurse” but your duties were PSW work, do not file as 31301. IRCC and the college will both notice.

What “sponsorship” looks like for a nurse

There is no single stamp called a nursing visa.

A. Employer work permit (temporary)
A hospital or health authority offers a job. Many RN roles are high-wage under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, so the employer may need an LMIA. Some offers are LMIA-exempt (for example certain provincial health nominations or other IRCC codes). The employer submits the offer in the Employer Portal. You apply for the work permit with that number. Start here: work permits.

B. Express Entry — healthcare category
RNs (31301), NPs (31302) and LPNs (32101) sit in IRCC’s healthcare and social-services category. In 2026, that category has invited people at CRS scores far below general draws. One February 2026 healthcare round issued 4,000 invitations at a CRS cut-off of 467. IRCC also raised the category work-experience floor to one year (from six months) in February 2026. C. Provincial Nominee Program
Almost every province runs a health or nursing stream. A nomination adds 600 CRS points or can stand as its own PR path. Ontario, B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces all recruit nurses. Quebec uses a separate system and the OIIQ, not NNAS.

PR is the prize. The work permit is how many people start earning while the PR file moves.

Licence first: NNAS, the college, then NCLEX

You cannot lawfully work as an RN in Ontario, Alberta or B.C. on a Nigerian or Kenyan pin alone.

Step 1 — NNAS (every province except Quebec)
National Nursing Assessment Service collects transcripts, licences and employment forms sent by the school and the board, not by you in an envelope. You get an advisory report (comparable / somewhat comparable / not comparable). That report is not a licence.

Step 2 — Provincial college
Examples: College of Nurses of Ontario, BCCNM, CRNA. They decide if you write the exam, need extra courses, or can register. Language proof is theirs, not IRCC’s IELTS-for-PR score — though the same test may serve both if it meets both lists.

Step 3 — Exam
Most RN applicants write NCLEX-RN. Practical nurses in some provinces write REx-PN. Passing NCLEX does not grant a visa. Failing it blocks the job even if IRCC likes your CRS.

Step 4 — Registration and a job that matches the class
Temporary or provisional classes exist in some provinces. Read the college page for your province. Do not pay an agent who “registers you in all ten provinces this week.”

Budget months, not days. NNAS waits on your university. The college waits on NNAS. NCLEX seats fill. Start this file before you chase LMIA screenshots.

Language

Colleges want CELBAN, IELTS Academic, or another listed test at their bands. Express Entry wants CLB 7 or higher for Federal Skilled Worker in each ability — higher scores add CRS. One weak module can stall both files. Book the test that the college names, then check whether IRCC accepts the same sitting.

Where the money actually is

Job Bank national RN range has sat around $30.00–$54.37 an hour, median $43.27. Provincial medians in recent Job Bank tables:

  • British Columbia ~$47.58
  • Alberta ~$47.50
  • Saskatchewan ~$47.13
  • Manitoba ~$45.00
  • Ontario ~$42.00
  • Quebec ~$40.00
  • Territories often higher (NWT/Nunavut medians in the high $50s)

Union grids (ONA, BCNU, UNA and others) pay more at the top step and add evening, night and weekend premiums. ICU, emergency, theatre and rural northern posts often beat medical-ward base pay. Housing in Toronto or Vancouver will eat a larger share of $90,000 than the same wage in Regina or Halifax. Compare net plus rent, not the hourly poster.

NPs and some clinical educators clear six figures more reliably than a new IEN on a medical unit. Do not advertise yourself as an NP unless the college will register you in that class.

How to apply without wasting a year

  1. Decide RN vs LPN. Your transcript decides, not your WhatsApp title.
  2. Open NNAS and request documents from school and licensing board.
  3. Pick one province and read that college’s IEN page end to end.
  4. Book language and, when the college allows it, NCLEX.
  5. Create an Express Entry profile if you meet FSW or CEC rules — even while NNAS runs.
  6. Apply to health authorities that list international hires: Ontario Health teams, Alberta Health Services, Fraser Health, Interior Health, Saskatchewan Health Authority, Nova Scotia Health. Use Job Bank and the authority career sites.
  7. If the offer needs an LMIA, the employer files it. You do not pay the $1,000 LMIA fee.
  8. Work-permit application on IRCC with medical exam from a panel physician if required.
  9. After you land, keep the college licence current. A lapsed licence can sink both the job and a later PR application.

Costs you should expect (not the fake ones)

  • NNAS fees (regular or expedited streams — confirm on nnas.ca)
  • College application and registration
  • NCLEX / REx-PN
  • Language test
  • Educational credential assessment for Express Entry (WES or another IRCC-designated body — this is not a substitute for NNAS)
  • IRCC fees for work permit or PR
  • Medical exam and police certificates
  • First month’s rent in Canada

An agent fee on top of those is optional. An agent fee instead of NNAS is a loss.

Red flags

  • “PSW visa, same as RN”
  • Pay below the provincial nursing grid “until you write NCLEX in Canada” with no college plan
  • LMIA sold to you as a product
  • Quebec job + NNAS (wrong regulator)
  • Anyone who cannot name the college in the province on the contract

Family, taxes, health cover

A work permit can include a spouse open work permit and children in school, depending on your permit type and current IRCC rules — verify the page for your category before you promise anyone. Provincial health insurance has a waiting period in some provinces; the employer benefits plan matters in month one. You will pay federal and provincial tax. Union dues come off a hospital cheque. What you send home is net.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work as a PSW while NNAS runs?
Some people do, on a separate permit and a separate job. It does not replace RN registration and it does not put you in the healthcare Express Entry occupation list as an RN.

Do I need a Canadian BScN?
Not if NNAS and the college find your foreign degree comparable. If they do not, you may be asked for bridging courses. That is slower and still cheaper than pretending.

How long?
NNAS plus college plus NCLEX is often the long pole — many months. A healthcare Express Entry draw can be fast once the profile is complete and the CRS is in range. An LMIA work permit follows the employer’s file, not your impatience.

Conclusion

The nurses who actually start on a Canadian ward in 2026 are the ones who treated NNAS and the provincial college as job one, then used Express Entry healthcare draws or a health-authority LMIA as job two. The CRS cut-off around 467 in early 2026 healthcare rounds is only useful if your NOC is 31301, 31302 or 32101 and your licence file is not fiction.

Price the move as CAD $65,000–$115,000+ for an RN who clears registration and shift premiums — CAD $50,000–$75,000 for an LPN/RPN — and budget a year of paperwork before the first Canadian paycheque. If a recruiter leads with the visa and cannot name NNAS or the college in the province on the offer, the shortage is real and that person is still not your employer.

Start on three sites today: NNAS, the college for the province you can live in, and Express Entry. Everything else is noise until those three agree you are a nurse Canada can actually put on a roster.
