If you already drive passengers — danfo, coaster, staff bus, intercity — you can put in for Irish bus work from home. You do not need a European degree. You do need a real operator, a path to an Irish Category D licence and CPC card, and — if you are not EEA — an employment permit the company files.
This guide is the apply path. Salary tag stays up to €33,000 for early roster / starter talk. Some Dublin Bus 2026 ads have also used figures near €44,700 once you are trained. A first-time General Employment Permit from 1 March 2026 usually needs at least €36,605. Ask the employer which number will sit on the permit form.

EEA citizens walk in. Everyone else applies in this order:
- Show you can drive professionally (home licence, record, medical).
- Get a written offer from an Irish operator.
- Employer checks the occupation is not blocked on the Ineligible Occupations List and, if a General Employment Permit is used, runs the labour market needs test and files at DETE.
- You complete Irish immigration permission and then the Category D + CPC path in Ireland (RSA does not let you take a full PSV out on a FRSC bus class alone).
Passenger / HGV driving has often been tight on the ineligible list, with talk of exceptions where the person already holds the correct Irish licence. That is why some files work and many WhatsApp “allocations” do not. Your job is to apply to named depots and let them tell you if they will sponsor. Do not pay a middleman to guess.
HGV/bus mechanic quotas are a different job. Do not confuse workshop permits with a driver’s seat.
What Irish operators want to see from you
Write a one-page CV in plain English:
- Full name, phone with country code, email you check
- Licence: class at home (e.g. Nigeria Class E / D equivalent), year issued, any passenger or PSV endorsement
- Years driving buses or coaches, vehicle size, routes (city / highway / staff)
- Clean record — say so if it is true
- English: you can use radio and deal with the public
- Willing to complete Irish Category D and Driver CPC
- Willing to work late and weekend rosters
Attach: passport bio page, licence scan both sides, one reference on company letterhead if you have it.
That package is enough to apply. It is not yet a permit.

If they offer €33,000 and a GEP, ask them how that clears DETE. Night and Sunday money can lift a year. Dublin rent can flatten it. Do net-plus-rent before you resign.

- Pass or renew a medical that shows you can drive professionally

RSA path for Category D / CPC (summary — follow rsa.ie):
- Full Category B first if you do not already hold an exchangeable equivalent

Foreign-licence exchange depends on whether Ireland has an agreement with your country and on the date your bus licence was issued. Nigeria is not in the automatic EU-exchange group. Read foreign CPC drivers so you know if you exchange or restart. Operators who sponsor usually build training time into the start date. They do not skip RSA.
Permit, in one page
Employer (not you) files. Typical route is General Employment Permit if the job is eligible:
- Labour market needs test (they advertise in Ireland first)
- Salary at or above the live DETE floor
- Contract of 39-hour-week arithmetic that matches the form
Then you apply for Irish residence / entry permission with that permit. Embassy / ISD instructions are on irishimmigration.ie.
You do not enter as a visitor and “start driving.” That kills the file.

How the first 90 days usually go if the offer is real
Offer → permit filed → you get a decision → you book travel → you register in Ireland → you start B/D/CPC as the operator scheduled → you join the roster when RSA says you can. That is months, not a weekend. Anyone selling a seat for next Friday is not an operator.
Money you should pay — and money you should not
Pay: passport, police report, medical, flights after approval, RSA test fees once you are resident, first month’s rent.
Do not pay: “allocation,” “DETE contact,” “embassy fast track” into a personal account. DETE fees belong on the government payment page. The employer pays their side.

Can a Nigerian apply with only a car licence?
You can send a CV. You will not drive a bus until Category D and CPC are done. Operators prefer people who already drive large passenger vehicles at home.
Can my wife and children come?

Do I need IELTS?
Not always for the job. You need usable English. A permit or NDLS process may ask for proof. IELTS Academic is useful if you have it; it is not a substitute for CPC.
How many applications?
