New Zealand still moves milk, timber, containers and building materials by road. Some transport firms that hold Immigration New Zealand accreditation can hire drivers from overseas on an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).
That is what “visa sponsorship” means here: a named employer, a Job Check, and a visa that matches the contract. It is not a ticket you buy on WhatsApp.
Pay is in New Zealand dollars. Full-time Class 4 and Class 5 work commonly lands around NZ$55,000 to NZ$80,000+ a year once you add ordinary hours and overtime. That is roughly €30,000 to €45,000+, depending on the exchange rate — not a six-figure European package. Urban Class 2 work sits lower. Specialist tanker or long-haul work sits higher.

How hiring works
- The company is an accredited employer.
- They pass a Job Check (genuine vacancy, legal pay, hours).
- You get a written agreement.
- You apply for the AEWV with the Job Token.

From March 2025 the old “must hit the median wage for every AEWV” rule was removed. The job must still pay the New Zealand market rate for that role in that region, and at least the adult minimum wage (NZ$23.95 an hour from 1 April 2026). Other settings (Green List, some residence clocks, partner support) still use the immigration median wage, which rose to NZ$35.00 an hour on 9 March 2026. Licence: this is the real gate
New Zealand heavy licences are Class 2, 4 and 5. Long combination and heavier work needs Class 4 or 5.
An overseas heavy licence is not automatically a New Zealand Class 5. You convert through NZTA Waka Kotahi. You may need theory, a practical test, a medical and an eyesight check. Start at NZ driver licence classes.
If your home licence is only a car class, this job is not for you yet.
You also need to read English well enough for logbooks, load restraints, weighbridges and police stops. Employers will test that on a call.
What the jobs look like
- Distribution / urban — Class 2 or 4, depot to shops, home most nights
- General freight / linehaul — Class 5, Auckland–Wellington or island runs
- Dairy tanker / livestock / logging — specialist gear, often rural
- Furniture removal / tow / aircraft refuel — named roles on some transport lists
Physical work, early starts, drug tests and fatigue rules are normal. Long-haul often means nights in the cab.
Pay: a realistic tag

PayScale and job boards cluster heavy-truck base pay in the mid-to-high NZ$20s per hour; annual totals rise with hours. Jobted-style medians around the mid NZ$60,000s assume longer weeks. Do not plan on NZ$120,000 unless you own the truck.
Tax, ACC and KiwiSaver come off. What you send home is net minus rent.
Accommodation
Some firms offer:
- A few nights in a motel when you land
- A shared house near the depot, with rent taken from wages
- Nothing — you find a flat yourself
Long-haul drivers often sleep in the cab on run nights. That is not “free housing.” Get the weekly rent and what it includes in the contract. Deductions must still leave you at or above the minimum wage. Employment rules: Employment New Zealand.
Residence later (do not assume)
New Zealand has a Transport Work to Residence pathway. Truck driving has been on that list with conditions: Class 4 or 5 work, accredited employer, and a wage at the rate INZ sets for that pathway (median-linked figures have moved through NZ$31.61 → $33.56 → $35.00). Some transport titles were tightened after April 2024, with grandfathering for people already counting time. An AEWV is not automatic residence.
How to apply
1. Confirm you hold a convertible heavy licence and recent truck hours.
2. Write a short CV: licence class, trailer types, kilometres, clean record, tanker/ADR if any.
3. Apply only to firms that can show INZ accreditation. Search Seek NZ — truck driver Class 4 visa, Class 5 AEWV.
4. Interview on fatigue, load restraint and whether you will convert the licence in NZ.
5. Sign an agreement that states wage, hours, rent (if any) and who pays conversion.
6. Lodge the AEWV yourself on immigration.govt.nz or through a licensed adviser. Fees are published by INZ (application plus levy — budget about NZ$1,540 for the migrant side, plus medicals).
Red flags
- “Guaranteed visa” with no depot name
- Pay under NZ$23.95 an hour after April 2026
- Fee into a personal account “for Immigration”
- Tourist visa then “just start driving”
- Employer who cannot explain Job Check
