You do not need a university degree to be considered for a sponsored construction job in the United Kingdom.
What you need is a named trade, proof you can do the work, a licensed sponsor, and a salary that meets Home Office rules. The United Kingdom is short of people who can build. That is why bricklayers, carpenters, roofers and some related trades have remained on the lists that still allow sponsorship in 2026.
This guide is written for applicants in Nigeria and across Africa. It covers who qualifies, what you can earn, the exact visa, documents, fees, English, family rules, where to apply, and how to avoid paying for a job that does not exist.
Always confirm live rules on GOV.UK — Skilled Worker visa before you spend money. Lists and salary floors change.
What “visa sponsorship” means in construction
Sponsorship is not a ticket you buy from an agent.
It means a UK company that already holds a sponsor licence:
- Offers you a real job that matches an eligible occupation code
- Issues a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
- Pays you at least the legal minimum for that code
You then apply for the Skilled Worker visa. Without a CoS, there is no work visa.
Check every employer on the official register of licensed sponsors.
Who can apply if you did not go to university
Since 22 July 2025, most new Skilled Worker jobs must be degree-level (RQF 6). Construction trades sit below that line. They only stay open if the occupation is on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) or the Temporary Shortage List (TSL).
Trades commonly still in play (confirm the date)
On the Immigration Salary List (UK-wide in the published table, with a removal date of 31 December 2026 unless the government extends it):
- Bricklayers (SOC 5313)
- Carpenters and joiners (SOC 5316)
- Roofers, roof tilers and slaters (SOC 5314)
- Stonemasons and related trades (SOC 5312)
- Retrofitters only under construction trades not elsewhere classified (SOC 5319)
Other construction roles may sit on the Temporary Shortage List for Certificates of Sponsorship issued before 31 December 2026, including some steel erectors, plumbers and heating installers, electricians and trades supervisors. That list is not permanent. Read Appendix Immigration Salary List and Skilled Worker — your job on the day you apply.
Who is not eligible
Construction labourers and general operatives are not sponsorable. GOV.UK states that bricklayers, roofers and carpenters can be eligible and labourers are not. If your only work is carrying blocks, digging or “helping on site,” this visa is not built for you.
What you need instead of a degree
UK firms hire skill, not a certificate of occupancy.
Useful evidence:
- Two or more years doing the actual trade (one year is a hard sell)
- NVQ, City & Guilds, trade-test result, or a detailed reference on company letterhead that describes your work
- Clear photos of work you completed (your face and the finished wall, roof, frame or install)
- CSCS card if you already have one (helpful on site; it is not a visa)
- Tools and methods you can explain on a video call (levels, mix, drawings, safety)
WAEC or NECO alone will not get a CoS. A “I know building work” CV will not either. Write the UK job title: bricklayer, carpenter and joiner, roofer.
Salary: the visa floor and what sites actually pay
Two numbers matter.
Visa minimum. For most new Skilled Worker applications the general threshold is £41,700 a year or the going rate for the job, whichever is higher. Occupations on the Immigration Salary List use a lower general floor of £33,400, and you must still be paid at least the full going rate for that code. There is no 80% “shortage discount” any more. Details: your job.
Market pay for trades. A first sponsored bricklayer, carpenter or roofer often lands near that legal floor — about £33,400 to £38,000. The same person with strong references, London or South East work, overtime and travel can move toward £40,000 to £50,000+. That is the realistic band this article uses. It is not a director package.
Electricians, plumbers and working supervisors, where still sponsorable, often sit in the high thirties to around £50,000. Quantity surveyors, civil engineers and project managers are a different CV and a different salary conversation.
Do the net sum. UK income tax, National Insurance, rent and the Immigration Health Surcharge come off the headline. Compare what you can send home with what you earn now, not with a poster that says £100,000.
The visa, step by step
1. Confirm the occupation code
Use the guidance and the CASCOT tool linked from your job. The duties on the CoS must match the code. A “site helper” labelled bricklayer is a refusal waiting to happen.
2. Find a licensed sponsor
Search the sponsor register, then Indeed UK, Reed, Totaljobs and contractor career pages. Keywords: bricklayer visa sponsorship, carpenter CoS, roofer skilled worker.
3. Send a UK-style CV
One or two pages. Trade first. Years, housing or commercial, tools, team size. No long biography.
4. Interview
Usually video. Be ready to talk mix ratios, setting out, reading a simple drawing, working at height, and how you keep a wall plumb.
5. CoS
Only after a written offer. Note the SOC code, salary, hours and start date. They must match the visa form.
6. Visa application
Apply from outside the UK at GOV.UK Skilled Worker. Book biometrics at the visa application centre that serves your country.
7. Travel and start
You work for that sponsor. Changing employer means a new CoS and usually a new application.
Documents checklist
- Valid passport
- CoS number from the sponsor
- Proof of skill (certificates, references, dated photos)
- English evidence (see below)
- Tuberculosis test from a Home Office approved clinic if you have lived in Nigeria or another listed country
- Criminal record certificates if the form asks
- Maintenance funds or sponsor certification of maintenance (many sponsors certify so you do not show cash)
- Translations if any document is not in English
English language (2026)
For a first Skilled Worker application on or after 8 January 2026, GOV.UK requires B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening on an approved Secure English Language Test, unless you qualify another way (for example a degree taught in English that Ecctis confirms). People who already held Skilled Worker permission before that date follow the older B1 rule when they extend. Official page: knowledge of English.
Book only a UKVI-approved test. A school English result that is not on the list will not work.
Family members
This is the part many people miss.
For many medium-skilled shortage-list and Temporary Shortage List roles, new applicants whose CoS was assigned on or after 22 July 2025 cannot bring a partner or children on that visa. Degree-level construction jobs (engineer, quantity surveyor, project manager) follow the normal dependant rules. Do not assume your spouse can travel with you on a bricklayer CoS. Read the current dependant rules on GOV.UK for your exact code before you promise anyone at home.
What it costs (government fees, not agent fees)
Figures change. Check visa fees on GOV.UK when you apply. Published 2026 bands for applications from overseas include about £819 (standard, up to 3 years) or £1,618 (over 3 years), with lower fees if the job is on the Immigration Salary List (about £628 / £1,235).
The Immigration Health Surcharge is typically £1,035 per adult per year of the visa, paid up front. A longer visa therefore costs more in surcharge than in the application fee itself. Health and Care visas are a different (cheaper) track and do not apply to construction.
Add: TB test, English test, passport photos, travel, and the first month’s rent in the UK. The sponsor pays the Certificate of Sponsorship fee and the Immigration Skills Charge — you should not be billed those as a “processing fee” into a personal account.
Life on a UK site
Expect early starts, PPE, inductions, and toolbox talks. You will need a way to get to site. Some firms help with the first weeks of housing; many do not. London rent will consume a large share of a £33,400–£40,000 wage. Northern and Midlands towns are cheaper. Ask where the site is before you accept.
Driving time and working time on tools are not the same as a Nigerian “site till dark” culture. Health and safety rules are enforced.
Settlement later
A Skilled Worker visa can lead to settlement after the qualifying period, with its own salary and English tests. That is years away. Do not treat the first CoS as citizenship. Rules on the qualifying period have been under review — verify the current years on GOV.UK when you are close.
Scams that target African applicants
- “Pay ₦2 million, we have a Manchester allocation”
- Labourer jobs sold as visa jobs
- Recruiter who is not the employer and wants cash in a personal account
- Contract below the going rate “until you learn UK style”
- Anyone who cannot show the company on the sponsor register
Home Office fees are paid on GOV.UK. Everything else is optional and often dangerous.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply with only site experience and no certificate?
Yes, if the employer accepts your references and photos and the job is a named eligible trade. Certificates help. They are not always mandatory.
Can a labourer get sponsored if the agent changes the title?
No. UKVI looks at duties, not the WhatsApp job name.
Do I need CSCS before I apply?
No. Many people get it after they arrive. It helps you start on site faster.
How long does the visa take?
After a complete application, standard decisions are often a few weeks. Priority costs extra. The slow part is usually finding a real CoS, not the stamp.
Can I switch employer?
Only with a new CoS that still meets the rules. You cannot freelance on this visa.
Checklist before you send money
- Job title is a sponsorable trade, not labourer
- Employer is on the live sponsor register
- Salary meets the 2026 rule for that SOC code
- You can prove the skill
- English and TB plans are booked or booked-able
- Family rights for that code are understood
- No unofficial fee
Bottom line
UK construction sponsorship in 2026 is still open to people who already do the trade. You do not need a degree. You do need a licensed sponsor, the right occupation code, B2 English on a first application, and a salary that clears the published floor — typically from £33,400 toward £50,000+ for experienced trades with overtime in higher-cost regions.
