Germany moves a huge share of Europe’s freight by road. Too few people want to sit behind the wheel of a LKW. That shortage is why transport firms hire drivers from outside the EU — if you already hold the right licence and professional qualification, or you can convert them.
This is not a “pay a agent, fly tomorrow” job. You need a Category C or CE licence, the EU Code 95 professional-driver qualification, a real German employer, and the correct residence title. Pay is decent by local standards, not Silicon Valley money.

Why firms still hire in 2026
Older drivers are retiring. Young Germans often skip long-haul work. E-commerce and factories still need goods moved. Berufskraftfahrer Güterverkehr sits on shortage lists used by the Federal Employment Agency. That helps employers get BA approval to hire you. It does not skip licence conversion or Code 95.

StepStone’s 2026 LKW-Fahrer range is roughly €29,700–€40,700 a year, average about €34,900. Kununu’s crowd data goes from about €28,300 to €51,400. That top end is how the €51,000+ tag is earned: experienced or specialised drivers, strong Tarif firms, plus overtime — not the first contract for a newly converted licence.
Minimum wage from 1 January 2026 is €13.90 an hour. Serious driving jobs pay above that. Long-haul cash is often base + night/Sunday premiums + tax-free daily Spesen (around €14 a day when you are away long enough; overnight trips add more). Ask for the split in writing. Spesen is expense money, not salary.
Visa routes that actually fit drivers
The EU Blue Card is built for graduates on a salary threshold. It is rarely the right tool for truckers.
What employers use:
1. Employment of professional drivers with BA consent (§24a BeschV)
If you already hold a recognised EU/EFTA C or CE licence and the initial or accelerated professional qualification (Code 95 / Directive 2022/2561), the Federal Employment Agency can approve the job without a full training-equivalence process. The embassy still checks the visa file. If you are 45 or older, some first-entry rules require a 2026 salary of €55,770 or proof of adequate pension provision. 2. Skilled-worker visa (§18a) plus recognition
If you have a completed vocational qualification as a professional driver that Germany can recognise, this is the standard skilled-worker path. Employers can use the fast-track procedure (§81a).
3. Recognition partnership
Enter on a contract and finish missing qualification pieces in Germany — only if the employer is set up for it.
4. Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)
Job-search entry if you score enough points and can fund the stay (blocked account figure for 2026 is published on Make it in Germany — Opportunity Card). You still cannot drive commercially until licence + Code 95 + work permit line up.

What you must hold before you earn
Licence. Commercial trucks: C or CE (articulated). A car licence is useless for this article.
Conversion. EU/EEA licences are recognised. Third-country licences are only valid for about six months after you take up ordinary residence. After that you need a German card. Countries on Annex 11 of the Driving Licence Ordinance get an easier swap. Most other countries — including many in Africa and Asia — need theory and practical tests. Code 95. This is the EU professional-driver qualification printed on the licence or driver qualification card. Without it you are not a commercial driver in Germany. Germany has been widening the languages available for the accelerated initial-qualification exam (including English and others). Confirm current languages with the exam body, not a WhatsApp group.
German. A2–B1 is the realistic band for depot talk, police, and tachograph problems. Road signs you can learn. Dispatch radio is German.
Medical and character. Eyesight, fitness, police certificates.
Experience. One to two years in a similar vehicle is what most firms want. Zero experience plus a foreign car licence is not a Germany truck job.
How to apply (do this in order)
Step 1 — Get the paper right
C/CE (or a clear plan to convert), Code 95 or a booked qualification path, medical, clean record.
Step 2 — Write a European CV
Use the Europass layout if you want. List vehicle types, trailer experience, ADR, kilometres, tachograph, accident-free years. German or English, short.

Step 4 — Interview
Video is normal. They will ask licence class, Code 95 expiry, night work, and whether you will live in Germany or only transit. Say if you still need conversion. Lying ends the file at the embassy.
Step 5 — Written contract
Gross wage, hours, Spesen, who pays licence conversion and Code 95, start date, depot city.
Step 6 — Visa
Employer starts BA consent / fast-track. You book the German mission with passport, contract, licence copies, qualification proof, insurance, and funds. Use Germany’s visa portal for the post that covers your country.
Step 7 — Arrive, convert, start
Register address (Anmeldung), health insurance, tax ID. Finish licence exchange inside the six-month window if you came on a third-country card.
Documents
Passport, C/CE licence + translation if needed, Code 95 proof, CV, reference letters, police certificates, medical, contract, photos. Family later needs income and housing proof under family reunification rules — Make it in Germany family.
Scams
No serious German haulier charges you thousands for a “guaranteed CE job.” Apply on company sites and the Arbeitsagentur. If the “contract” arrives before anyone has seen your licence photo, walk away.
FAQ, short
Do companies sponsor visas? Some do, if BA can approve you. The contract is the sponsorship, not a separate product.
Can I start with no experience? Almost never on CE freight.
Accommodation? Sometimes a room for the first weeks. Confirm in the contract.
Hours? Driving time is legally capped. Expect early starts and nights on long-haul.
Change employer? Only if the new job still fits the permit. Tell the foreigners office.
